I’m kickin’ it back to the old school ‘Cause I’m an old fool who’s so cool. Part 2
This is actually the first mix set I ever put on CD. I did it originally to play while working at Best Buy in the music department. Technically, we were to play the boring CD management would send down each month, highlighting whatever crap they were trying to push out the door that week. After listening to the same Mariah Carey song over and over and over, each of the employees in the music department decided to each choose 1 CD to put in the carousel.

I opted for my own brand of music, and brought this in one day. I was told it had to be fairly mainstream, since we were going to be subjecting unwitting customers to our eclectic tastes in music all day. This was right around the time when Party 93.1 showed up on the air, and started playing mainstream dance music. I loaded up most of the mix with stuff like, Insomnia, Move Your Body, Zombie 3000, and other slightly less annoying tracks. I also let each track play out for pretty much it’s entire length, which is the last of that style you’ll see in my sets. The beginning is pretty tame, but I usually drift off into some sort of breakbeat tracks toward the end.
The point of all this, is that I constantly had customers approaching me asking where they could find the CD that was playing. Unfortunately, they didn’t exactly stock my mix in the store. At the time, they didn’t even have an electronic music section, they just put anything remotely close at the end of the Rock section. So, being the little entrepreneur I was, I decided to bring in extra copies and sell them before or after work outside in the parking lot to customers who asked for it. Not exactly legal in most respects, but whatever, I was a kid in high school…

I’m kickin’ it back to the old school ‘Cause I’m an old fool who’s so cool.
While cleaning up in my studio yesterday, I came across an old dusty CD case- tucked under the “wood” framed Wal-Mart futon we have in there. I opened it up, and found copies of most of my old mix sets.. including some of my first sets (like the ones you’d hear at any of my high school house parties – Sorry, Mom!).
So, I ripped them all onto the computer so I can put them up here for your reminiscing enjoyment.

Volume 2 was a favorite of mine, was usually requested at each party for a while. This is mostly hard trance, get’s a little deep in a few parts.
Recommended: A good pair of headphones or a quality sound system to listen to this mix.
more to come…
Copaformer Megamix
I was asked by a friend to put together a short megamix containing Copacabana by Barry Manilow and Informer by Snow because this guy at work sings these two songs all day. These two songs should never go together in a mix, but it was requested as such. This was mixed live on two Technics 1200SLs using Stanton Final Scratch Digital Vinyl.
Tripping on Yooouuutuuube
Oh internets, you never cease to amaze me. This latest fad-site allows you to choose any YouTube video, and have it magically strewn across your computer screen over a thousand times at once. The beauty of this, is that it delays each instant by a few seconds each, giving sort of a kaleidescope effect.

The above example is a video I posted a few weeks back, by Pogo. (You can click the image to load the Yooouuutuuube version.)
Simply visit www.yooouuutuuube.com and paste a YouTube link of your choice. Adjust the settings to your little heart’s content (width, height, shuffle, etc.) and go for it. This may lag a bit on older computers, so if it doesn’t run smoothly, it’s time for an upgrade.
Some other great videos to do this with are:

Boom Boom Bizzap
So I put together a electro-breaks remix of Boom Boom Pow by the Black Eyed Peas. I like the track, but I felt it needed a bit more….ooomph. Being from the South, I happen to like way too much bass than necessary in my music.
I’d prefer it if you gave this a listen in a sound system that can accomodate such low end sound in order to get the full effect.

Tone Matrix in Flash
Here’s a simple tone matrix someone created in flash. To play, just start clicking some squares and the sequence will loop on its own.
Warning: This could consume hours of your time!

Try changing the pattern while the tone plays to make different sounds.
Hump Day Mix Session
I hopped on the ‘decks yesterday afternoon for a quick little half hour mix session.

It starts out with a classic tune and moves on into some of my current faves. This set was done completely live on two Technics SL-1200 turntables.

Xtranormal
We’ve all walked out of a movie and said, “I could’ve done better than that.” Here’s your chance to put your money where your mouth is. xtranormal aims to bring out the director/ creator in all of us with www.xtranormal.com, an application that allows users to create video spots from a variety of templates and broadcast to the audience of their choice. Through a range of production tools that simplify the entire movie-making process to ingenious avatars that recreate your dialogue, xtranormal has created a technology that could have far-reaching ramifications not only for the entertainment industry but for the very definition of online video.

I’ve taken a few minutes to give the new service a try and created 3 original videos and one “remix”. The site allows you to take someone else’s work and put your own spin on their creation.
This could get addicting for just about anyone who loves to be creative. Even though the abilities of the animated characters are somewhat limited, there are plenty of variables to keep things interesting for a while.
After all, it’s still in Beta. Give it a try and share your posts with me, I’d love to see what you can come up with! My profile can be found at: http://www.xtranormal.com/profile/inimical
